Here are 5 Things You Should Know Before Going to Gym

Starting at the gym can be both exciting and intimidating. Whether you’re looking to get fit, lose weight, or build muscle, the gym is a fantastic place to work towards your goals. If you’re new to the gym, it’s easy to feel lost among the machines and unsure of where to start. You might also worry about using the equipment incorrectly and injuring yourself.

I’ve been there too and it’s not your fault for being so overwhelmed, but with a bit of assistance and persistence, I found my rhythm, and I’m here to help you find yours as well. Here are my top 5 tips for anyone new to the gym.

1. Set Your Goals

Before you even step foot in the gym, it’s crucial to know what you want to achieve. Many people head to the gym without a clear objective, which can hinder their progress. Setting clear and realistic goals will keep you motivated and focused.

Example of Goals:

  • Lose 10 pounds
  • Run 5 kilometres in under 30 minutes
  • Simply get fit

I really like the SMART method when setting my goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying “I want to get fit,” you could set a goal to “run a 5k in under 30 minutes within 3 months.” Understanding and setting your goals is one of the most important things you should do before going to the gym.

But how you might ask? Click here for a short 3-minute read on how to apply this method easily & efficiently.

2. Choose the Right Gym

You might be asking, “What do you mean by choosing the right gym, and what are the characteristics of it?”

Consider these factors:

  • Location: If the gym is 20 minutes away from your house or workplace, you might find yourself thinking, “It takes too long to get there; maybe I’ll skip today.” A convenient location that takes 10 minutes or less to reach is crucial to ensure you stay consistent, which is important for achieving your fitness goals.
  • Membership costs: Fit within your budget.
  • Available equipment: Ensure the gym has the equipment you need.
  • Overall vibe: Find a place where you feel welcome and motivated.

Visit a few gyms, take advantage of free trials, and see where you feel most comfortable. Remember, you’ll be spending a lot of time here, so it’s important to find a place that suits your needs and makes it easier to stick to your fitness routine.

3. Learn to Use Equipment and Perform Exercises Correctly

Understanding how to use gym equipment and perform exercises correctly is crucial for avoiding injury and getting the most out of your workouts.

Key points:

  • Proper form: Ensures you’re targeting the right muscles and helps prevent strains or other injuries.
  • Ask for help: Don’t be afraid to ask for help from gym-goers. Many are willing to offer assistance and share their knowledge.
  • Instructional videos: You can also find plenty of instructional videos online from YouTube and fitness apps that have countless tutorials on how to perform various exercises correctly. Watching these videos can help you understand the mechanics of each movement and give you visual cues to follow.
  • Feedback: If you are still unsure about your form, consider recording yourself or asking a friend to spot you and provide feedback.

Start with basic exercises:

  • Squats
  • Push-ups
  • Rows

These compound movements are great for building overall strength and conditioning. Over time, as you become more comfortable and confident, you can gradually increase the weight and complexity of your exercises.

4. Get the Right Gear

You don’t need anything fancy, but having the right gear can make your workouts more comfortable and enjoyable. For example, you can buy straps for workouts, which help you to increase your grip while lifting weights or doing pull-ups. Investing in good quality workout clothes and proper footwear is crucial for comfort and performance during your workouts.

Essential items to bring:

  • Water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Towel for sweat
  • Lock to secure your belongings
  • Headphones to enjoy music or podcasts

If you like tracking your progress, consider getting a fitness tracker to monitor your activity and stay motivated.

5. Stay Positive and Patient

Progress takes time, so it’s important to stay positive and patient on your fitness journey. Consistency and dedication will lead to significant improvements in your strength, endurance, and overall well-being. Don’t get discouraged by setbacks; they are a natural part of the process.

Celebrate small victories like:

  • Lifting a heavier weight
  • Running an extra mile
  • Feeling more energetic

These achievements reflect your hard work and commitment. Surround yourself with a supportive community, set realistic goals, and maintain a positive attitude. Trust the process and give yourself credit for the progress you’ve made.

Remember, it’s not just about the destination but also about enjoying and learning from the journey.

Starting at the gym can be daunting, but with the right mindset and preparation, it can become one of the most rewarding parts of your life. Remember the tips above and stay track on it, then  you’ll be well on your way to achieving your fitness goals. Just go and don’t think too much, the results will come naturally and everything will just fall into place . Take the first step today and embrace the journey ahead. You’ve got this!
